Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What if I have a question that was not answered here?
A: Please drop us a line! We are happy to answer any questions you have about the Carollers. We look forward to hearing from you!
Q: Who are The Baker Street Victorian Carollers?
A: The Carollers are a group of musicians who perform Christmas songs a cappella (without accompaniment). We are professional singers with years of opera, musical theatre, and choral singing experience. We are teachers, students, artists, and entrepreneurs. We love music and performing, and bringing holiday joy to our audiences.
Q: Why are you called The Baker Street Victorian Carollers?
A: We took our name from the well-known address of Sherlock Holmes, the famous fictional Victorian detective. The name is also a reference to the group's founder, Richard Crossman, who is a professional baker by trade.
Q: Where are you located?
A: We are based out of Hamilton, but we perform all over Southern Ontario.
Q: At what sort of events do you perform?
A: We perform indoors and outdoors, at holiday fairs, business events, church functions, city ceremonies, Christmas parties, and more. In past seasons we have performed at Tree Lighting Ceremonies in Clarkson, Unionville, Burlington, Ancaster, Markham and Port Credit, at the Home for the Holidays Christmas Decorating Show in Markham, in the lobby at the Canadian Orpheus Male Choir Christmas Concerts in Hamilton and Burlington, and at many private and corporate parties. We have even performed at Dundurn Castle, Fort York and the Niagara Falls History Museum. Whether clients are looking for strolling carollers, a stage performance, or something in between, The Baker Street Victorian Carollers are ready with a full repertoire of Christmas favourites.
Q: How many Carollers sing at events?
A: Typically, we appear in quartets singing four-part harmony. However, there are more than 20 Carollers in the company and we sometimes provide multiple groups, or larger groups, for an event.
Q: How much do The Baker Street Victorian Carollers cost?
A: Our package prices vary depending on your event requirements and the location - please contact us for a quote tailored to your event.
Q: How many songs do you perform?
A: We have nearly 60 songs in our repertoire.
Q: How long have the Carollers been around?
A: This year will be our eighth season as a professional troupe.
Q: What kind of carols do you sing?
A: Most of our carols are from Victorian times or earlier, arranged in traditional harmonies by Victorian musicians Sir John Stainer and Sir Arthur Sullivan. We do sing several modern favourites, though, (many arranged by Richard Crossman our director) and we're always happy to comply with special requests.
Q: Where do you get your costumes?
A: We make them! Richard Crossman, the artistic director of the Carollers, is an accomplished costumer and makes most of the pieces by hand through his company Kelly-Francis Costumes Inc. Every costume is designed to be comfortable, durable, and historically accurate.
Q: There are a lot of carolling groups out there. What makes you special?
A: The Baker Street Victorian Carollers is a trademarked, guaranteed performance company. We remain unmatched in Southern Ontario for talent, musicianship, appearance, and professionalism. Our customers can be certain that they are providing the best possible carolling experience for their guests.
Q: Where can I see you perform?
A: We are constantly updating our performance schedule on our website at www.victoriancarolers.ca. Check back often to find out when we're coming to your area!
Q: Do you have any recorded albums available?
A: Yes. Our first album, Our Christmas, is available by submitting a request on this page or on iTunes and Reverbnation. The album features traditional choral pieces, solos, and one or two modern pieces. A number of our performances have been posted on YouTube.
